Welcome to My Outlet, My Path to Freedom
Welcome to my little piece of the internet. I am excited to share using this platform! I have dreamt of writing for a while now, and actually have a few dreams that I've never had the courage to pursue. I’m sure many can relate to the latter part. My hope is that together we will make our dreams our reality.
My Story
I’ve struggled for a long time to find my place in this world, trying different paths to make myself “fit in” to rather than following my unique gifts and interests. I had to notice the pattern in my life of feeling overwhelmed, unsure, and unfulfilled to finally realize that I am meant to follow my own path and that looking inward for answers rather than outward was key. This has been my focus for the last year. From my perspective, society pushes us to play small through its expectations, norms, and systems. It's just not built in a way that allows people like me to thrive easily. Once I became aware of this, there was so much that I had to unlearn. What if things don't have to be this way? What if we can change the way we live and learn so that we don't have to spend so much time unlearning later on? I felt drawn to working with young people, specifically women and LGBTQIA+ folks, to help make this information more accessible to us.
My Why (the short version)
Before I left my little 32 sq. ft. island to attend University, I said I wanted to be a surgeon. As I started University, I realized this wasn't MY dream. Taking the medical path was my parent’s expectation for me. This is the point where my struggle to choose what I wanted to do began. I tried taking courses in a handful of different fields until I found Sociology and Women's Studies. This wasn’t an easy choice to make because what exactly can you do with a degree in these? Regardless of what others had to say, I knew that this was the path for me because I personally felt that the topics that were offered were interesting and relevant to my experience. The adjustment to college was rough. There was so much going on in my life at that time, from figuring out how to cope with the death of my best friend, to the realization that I wasn't as smart as I thought I was, to being far away from my family and friends for the first time, exploring my sexuality, and the reality that came with suddenly becoming the minority. I could go on and on about the things I had to face during this major life transition. Taking this course of study saved me.
